Fair Trade Condoms

We are delighted at Fair Squared to have had a leading retailer support us in creating the first commercial fair trade condom, designed to offer an ethical alternative to the traditional main stream corporates.

Waitrose is first supermarket to stock fairly traded condoms

The ethical movement is going behind the bedroom door, as fairly traded condoms launch at a UK supermarket for the first time.

Many of us are aware of the ethical and environmental effects of such common household items as sugar and soap, which regularly appear in bathrooms and kitchens across Britain.

Waitrose buyer Siobhan Bowie says, ‘We have come a long way since the days of people thinking fair trade is just about bananas and coffee, so it makes perfect sense to start introducing customers to more innovative and fairly traded products. These condoms are not only an exciting development in the fair trade movement, but come with the highest quality credentials and are produced in an area of India which is in dire need of support. We are proud that our customers can now practice safe sex and support a good cause at the same time - you can’t say fairer than that.’

The supermarket will be stocking two types of condoms from FairSquared, a small ethical supplier based in Newcastle. Made from fair trade rubber farmed in South India, the Keralan workers who produce the rubber benefit from fair prices, fair working conditions and fair supplier relationship. Certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, sourced from a responsibly managed plantation, and produced in a carbon neutral environment, these condoms have the strongest ethical credentials around.

Notes to Editors:

FairSquared fair trade condoms will be available at selected Waitrose branches from 4th April, priced at £6.99. Ultra thin condoms will be in 159 branches and Ribbed condoms will be in 35 branches.
